Action at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions is well underway, kicked off by the Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby.
Friday, February 15 saw limited aged event herd work continue from the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. When the final three sets of Derby Open division herd work concluded from W.R. Watt Arena, it was Clay Volmer and SDP Hy Rey Bound still in the driver’s seat with the outstanding score of 224 that they posted on Thursday, February 14. The 2015 stallion (TR Dual Rey x SDP Hydriven Hicapoo x Hydrive Cat) is owned by SDP Buffalo Ranch and bred by Shane Plummer.
Derby Open competitors compete in the second phase of competition on Saturday, February 16, when the reined work commences in John Justin Arena and the race for a portion of the $254,187 to be paid out across all Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby divisions continues to heat up.
Peptos Stylin Time (One Time Pepto x Stylin Jewel x Docs Stylish Oak), shown by Kyle Trahern for Peptos, LLC, held the lead to win the Derby Intermediate Open herd with a 221.
Hes Pistol Packin (Smooth As A Cat x Shiners Lil Pistol x Shining Spark), shown by Clint Allen for owners David and Stacie McDavid, took first in the Derby Limited Open with a 218.
The top spot in the Derby Open Novice Horse herd work was split between Its Tammy Time (One Time Pepto x Last Little Merada x Smart Little Lena), ridden by Clay Volmer for owner Barney McCain Smith, and Cats Wooden Heart (WR This Cats Smart x Gay Wooden Heart x Doctor Wood), ridden by Brad Lund for owner Jack Bogart. Both posted scores of 217.
In the Derby Level 1 Limited Open, the win went to Ms Becaco MagThree (CD Son Of Magnolia x Ms Becaco Threeflo x Becaco Tres Gin), ridden by John Snyder for owners Kennedy Snyder and Todd Bean, with a score of 215.
Following the Open herd, the Derby Non Professional, Amateur and Non Pro Limited divisions got underway. A talented field was evident in the Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby Non Pro herd work when first was split between five horse and rider teams, all of whom posted scores of 213 to split the win. The following entries shared the herd work victory: Toni Hagen Heath and Legend De Lena (Smart Peppy Doc x My Legend Del Cielo x Gallo Del Cielo); Brent Ratliff and Chex Out Tuff (Woody Be Tuff x Chex Out My Hiney x High Oak); Kenneth Schueller and Robs A Smart Cat (Dual Smart Rey x Cat Mate x High Brow Cat); Tori Simons and Hal On Ice (Halreycious x Shes Icing Onthe Cat x High Brow Cat); Eric Freitas and Cat Snacks (Cats Full Moon x Chic Snacks x Snackbox). Incidentally, Ratliff and Simons also shared the win in the Intermediate Non Pro herd work, and Simons took first in the Novice Non Pro herd.
Another tie resulted in the Amateur division of the herd work between Garrell Reilly and Emily Kent, each posting scores of 211. Reilly rode Maebe Lucky (Metallic Cat x Scoot A Lil Closer x Smart Lil Scoot), while Kent guided Dualin Alley Cats (Dual Rey x Chics Voodoo Cat x High Brow Cat) to the win.
Calley Rae Satriana was alone atop the Non Pro Limited herd work leader board when she rode Smart Savanah Holli (Blue Savanah Holli x Taffeta Ruffles x Smart Mate) to score a 210.
The Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby features 4- and 5-year-old reined cow horses shown two-handed in a hackamore or a snaffle bit competing in the herd work, reined work and cow work triathlon unique to NRCHA competition. No finals takes place in any of the limited age event divisions held during the Celebration of Champions.
